Kariya wants to kill Rantao but than remembers that when he was a child Rantao had helped him. When the Shinigami came to their town and started killing everyone off, Kariya escaped into a cave and Rantao came and rescued him and took him to safety. Kariya and some other surviors went onto the desert but had to fight the Hollows, but Kariya was able to beat them. Kariya then realized that he must take his Bount and form a group to go destroy the Soul Society.
